If you’ve always thought that the idea of you going to a tiny New England village, strolling the cobblestone streets with your leggings, hat, boots and cup of coffee, looking at antique shops sounds like the ideal afternoon, you’re right. It is! If you’ve never been shopping in antique shops before, have no fear. Here are a few pointers to get your feet wet while not coming off as a total geek.
First, find a shop with interesting things in the window – whether it’s furniture, glassware, lamps or whatever. Decide what appeals to you – when you look at an item and your heart stops for the briefest of seconds, then you’ll know. Gorgeous chandelier-okay! You’re on the right track – you’ve opened the door to the wonderful world of antiques.
Second, look at all the chandeliers (or even candelabras – chandeliers that stand on a table) that
appeal to you. Brass? Crystal? Silver? This is the crucial point where you define your style! Don’t let the many types of lights get you confused. When the salesperson starts throwing words at you like drum, antler, branched or beaded, just point to the one you like the best. They can take it from there. And honestly, just ask “what type of chandelier is this?” The shop keeper will not laugh at you or call you a ninny, I promise. If they do, send them MY way,I’ll take care of them!
Once you’ve picked out the style you want, it’s time to select the size. In the “olden days” you always had the giant chandelier in the foyer or living room. Not anymore. You can throw caution to the wind and have whatever size you want wherever you want it. AND mixing and matching styles and sizes is okay. In fact it makes your home much more interesting. So, march on, Antique Girl or Guy. Have fun. Buy what you love. And enjoy the memories created when you buy them!
Happy Hunting!
